Palm Sunday … Again

So, here we go again, embarking on the annual Via Dolorosa of Holy Week.  It starts so well:  Palm Sunday, the triumphal entry into Jerusalem.  Here the disciples had been so afraid of Jesus going to Jerusalem – when they couldn’t dissuade him from going, they went along reluctantly – Thomas even said to the others, “Let us go and die with him.”

But they didn’t die!  Not only did they not die, but they (well, Jesus) got a hero’s welcome!  Hurray!  We’re famous!  The Romans didn’t do anything!  Neither did the high priests!  The people love us!  He’s the Messiah!  He’s going to be king, throw out the Romans and those corrupt temple officials, and establish a new kingdom – and we’re going with him – who better to help rule than us, who’ve been with him since the start?  The 99 percent are coming into our own – after all, didn’t he say “The meek shall inherit the earth?” – that’s us, and isn’t it going to be sweet!  Yes!  We win!  Can’t you just see the looks on the faces of those self-righteous Pharisees when we come strutting by?  Oh, this is going to be fun!  James and John, they think they’re going to be sitting on Jesus’s right and left, but just wait until things settle down, and we’ll get them sorted out!

I wonder what Jesus thought, watching them, watching the whole thing unfold.  I wonder if it made him angry; I wonder if it hurt, to see them not only not getting it, but not realizing that the point of the meek inheriting the earth is not for the meek to then start behaving exactly the way their former rulers did.

I don’t think most of us get it, either.  But every year, we get reminded of the danger, and the cost.  Every year, we get another chance to get it right.  Maybe this year.

  1. Yes maybe this time we will get it right. Watching mym Dad as I am, I am reminded that the resurection is where God makes it all right. Knowing that the glory of heaven is waiting for him, I wonder why he is not running to it. But maybe God just isnt ready to take him yet …..and again I pray …. Thy will be done and I know in God’s time it will be done.

  2. SIGH. I hope so!

  3. We won’t get it right any more than the jews of Jesus’ time. Now we have our own “Pharisees.” We have those who hold court in Rome, New York, and right here in Houston. We have those who preach hate on so called “christian television.” Jesus was preaching about love. He wished for us to see that in one another. Our present day “Pharisees” do not observe the Gospels, instead they have chosen to be hateful and very political in their message. That message they spread is full of venom, it is not the message of Christ. The parable of the Pharisee and the Publican speaks volumes to me. Our Pharisees are no different than the Pharisees that we will read about again.
